NEW, ULTRA-THIN, METALLIZED OPP PCF2 FILM REPLACES FOIL

Toray Plastics (America), Inc. Introduces A Foil Free Packaging Solution for Packets and Stand-Up Pouches. North Kingstown, RI-(June 23, 2004) Converters can replace foil in packet and stand-up pouch applications with a new, technologically advanced, ultra-thin, puncture-resistant, metallized barrier OPP film. Toray Plastics (America), Inc.’s new 45-gauge Torayfan® PCF2 provides exceptional moisture and oxygen barrier durability and improved economics over traditional foil. Converters and food manufacturers are able to create foil-free, aesthetically appealing, cost-effective, finished packages that have overall enhanced barrier durability. Torayfan® PCF2 is now the ideal brand-building barrier packaging material for hot cocoa, seasoning, soup, rice, croutons, stuffing, dried cheese, powdered beverages and nutrition/energy drinks and confections.
“Converters and food manufacturers can achieve significant advantages over foil with Torayfan® PCF2. Greater yield, improved barrier durability and valuable aesthetics that are integral to brand appeal make it a very attractive alternative,” says Chris Voght, product manager, Torayfan Division.
Torayfan® PCF2 has industry-leading metal adhesion and greater bond strength between the non-metal lamination layer and extrusion laminations/coatings, compared to regular corona treated polypropylene. These advancements eliminate the dissatisfying delaminated “pouch in a pouch” effect that can occur when a consumer opens a weaker package.
At 45-gauge, Torayfan® PCF2 is the thinnest MOPP available in the packaging industry, delivering more film per pound than thicker films. Yet it maintains strong package processing characteristics. Increased footage also enables converters to reduce the number of required roll changes, thus reducing scrap and providing even greater cost savings.
Marketers prefer Torayfan® PCF2’s physical properties because, unlike foil, it does not exhibit a “shop worn” appearance after packaging and handling. Packets make a positive impression when taken out of a box, and stand-up pouches maintain a fresh, eye-catching appearance on the retail shelf.
